| St. Anselm’s Abbey School was founded in 1942 by Fr. Thomas Verner Moore, OSB, a Benedictine monk and founder of St. Anselm’s monastery, then known as St. Anselm’s Priory. Originally called the Priory School, St. Anselm’s began as a high school for intellectually gifted young men. Grades 7 and 8 were added in 1955, and grade 6 in 1990. The School was renamed St. Anselm’s Abbey School in 1961 when the monastery was elevated to the status of an abbey. Throughout the School’s 70-year history, the reputation of St. Anselm’s has been one of academic rigor and excellence. In 2011, 65 percent of graduates were recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as National Merit Scholars, Finalists, Semifinalists, or Commended Students. Today, the St. Anselm’s Abbey School community consists of 230 intellectually and academically gifted boys in Forms A through VI (grades six through twelve) and their families, more than 50 Benedictine and lay faculty members, and over 1,400 alumni. The School is located on the 40-acre wooded grounds of St. Anselm’s Abbey, with the monastic community continuing to play an integral role in campus life. Situated in the Brookland section of Northeast Washington, D.C., the campus is close to the National Shrine and the Catholic University of America as well as approximately 4 miles from Capitol Hill and Downtown Washington. |
