Bus Mechanic


WORK SCHEDULE
240 day contract. Hours are typically 7:00-3:30 daily with two 15-minute breaks. However, the daily schedule may vary depending on the needs of the district.


POSITION SUMMARY
Diagnose, adjust, repair, maintain and inspect buses and other school vehicles, and maintain and repair other powered equipment such as lawnmowers, tractors, or other equipment.

Essential Functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
Perform mechanic work
Inspection of buses
Maintain records of work performed on buses, cars, and trucks according to Arkansas
Facilities and Transportation Division’s Rules, Regulations, and Procedures.
Maintain accurate list of vehicle inventory.
Serve as district bus driver on routes as needed.
Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts
to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
Ensure that all district vehicles are kept clean and presentable at all times.
Assist in training new drivers and instruct them in safety rules and state regulations.
Use hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision
instruments, as well as power tools such as pneumatic wrenches, lathes, welding
equipment, and jacks and hoists.
Adjust and reline brakes, align wheels, tighten bolts/screws and reassemble equipment.
Examine and adjust protective guards, loose bolts, and specified safety devices.
Fuel buses
Responsible for supervision of bus shop and equipment.
Perform routine maintenance i.e. change oil, check batteries, lubricate equipment etc.
Test drive vehicles to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
Raise trucks, buses, and heavy parts or equipment using jacks or hoists.
Attach test instruments to equipment, and read dials and gauges to diagnose malfunctions.
Inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions, using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges.
Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
Rewire ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.
Specialize in repairing and maintaining parts of the engine, such as fuel injection systems.
Inspect, repair, and maintain automotive equipment such as pumps and compressors.
Ensure that OSHA safety procedures are implemented and complied with.
Install or repair accessories.
Disassemble and overhaul internal combustion engines, pumps, generators, clutches, and differential units.
Adjust/repair air brake systems
Communicate with vendors and suppliers.
Diagnose and repair vehicle heating and cooling systems.
Repair or adjust seats, doors, or windows.
Maintain or repair vehicles with alternative fuel systems.
Perform limited body work.
Tire maintenance : Rotation, mounting, and change as needed.
Establish and follow a routine of checking buses during extended breaks (Christmas, summer, etc.) to ensure readiness for routes after the break.
Make recommendations to the Transportation Director concerning shop personnel.
Work with all bus drivers to ensure the safety of students.
Adhere to all policies of the District and State of Arkansas.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director.

Skills and Abilities
Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED): Required Evidence of training in diesel mechanics (such as technical school certificate or other training evidence).: Experience Required.

Experience: Previous experience as a heavy truck/equipment mechanic.
Computer Skills: Shall be able to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency with computers and programs associated with the position.
Certifications & Licenses: Diesel engine certification preferred.

Other Requirements:
Successful completion of pre-employment background checks.
Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, staff, and the general public.
Valid AR Commercial Drivers License with School Bus Passenger with air brakes endorsement.
Successfully complete all required training of Arkansas Facilities and Transportation and the district.
Mechanic may be required to supply some of his/her own tools (negotiable).

Physical Requirements
Vision (Near, Distance, Color, Peripheral, Depth)
Sense of Sound - Ability to carry on normal conversation and to communicate by telephone and portable radio.
Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - As required for the job assignment.
Successfully pass bus driver physical.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment for this position is generally in a garage/shop setting with both inside and outside work. The noise level is moderate in most situations. Some exposure to extreme heat or cold may be encountered depending on the job assignment and the season of the year. Job will include exposure to fuel, oil, latex, grease and other chemicals associated with an auto mechanic shop.
