Job Description

Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the position of Custodian.  The position involves school and office cleaning work, completion of minor maintenance tasks, as well as grounds keeping.  The incumbent should be a team player who takes ownership of responsibilities and works to ensure a clean and safe building.  This position is considered essential.

 

DUTIES:

  • Perform daily duties assigned per shift schedule including, but not limited to: scrubbing and cleaning rest rooms (including toilet bowls, sinks, floors, walls, bathroom partitions, and trash cans), trash removal, vacuuming, refilling dispensers for soap, towels, and tissues;
  • Inspect and perform other tasks as needed: dust, scrub, strip and wax hard surface floors as needed, burnish, shampoo and dry carpeted surfaces, wash windows and furniture, wash fixtures, empty pencil sharpeners, high dust, damp mop, wet mop, spot mop, and otherwise provide all housekeeping services to maintain a clean, well maintained building;
  • Monitor level of cleaning supplies and fill as needed;
  • Report building/system deficiencies to head custodian;                               
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks as required (for example-change light bulbs, change air filters, painting, etc.);
  • Provide routine maintenance and inspections for play ground equipment (inspect as needed, maintain and dress safety surfacing, etc.);
  • Perform all grounds work as required to keep facility presentable and safe including, but not limited to: snow and ice removal, weeding, trimming grass, trimming shrubs, mowing, policing grounds for trash, mulching, and maintaining plantings;
  • Secure building at end of shift including locking all doors, activating alarm system, turning on all required security lights, etc.;
  • Assist with moving and transporting furniture, equipment, boxed textbooks, athletic equipment, and other supplies weighing up to 75 pounds either manually or with mechanical assistance;
  • Assist the building principal, teachers, and students in tasks as may be required to provide the best environment for the educational process;
  • Assist with special custodial and maintenance projects as needed;
  • This position is a direct report to the head custodian at work location.
  • Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the classification, and as assigned by the principal.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate;
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment, heating systems, principles of electricity and mechanics; 
  • Understand written and verbal instructions, manuals, warnings, etc. related to supervision, safety, proper use of equipment and chemicals;
  • Ability to accept directions from supervisors including head custodian or assigned lead custodian;
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively with others or independently;
  • Ability to climb a ladder and work overhead;
  • Ability to work for long periods of time while standing;
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions as required;
  • Ability to work weekends or evenings as required;
  • Ability to use cleaning chemicals and equipment in safe, approved manner;
  • Ability to perform lifting, carrying, or other related manual labor;
  • Ability to follow instructions and learn to operate standard machines used in custodial and grounds work in safe, effective manner;
  • Have experience in commercial maintenance;
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have a reliable means of transportation to work regardless of weather conditions.  A driver’s record check may be necessary to allow use of Board owned vehicles;
  • Be dependable, responsible, helpful, and able to work successfully with other people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Proven ability to work independently with little direction;
  • Proven ability to perform duties and interact with public, clerical, professional and executive staff in an appropriate manner; and
  • Proven ability to take complete ownership of responsibilities.

    IBM-compatible computers are used throughout the system in individual classrooms as well as strategically placed computer labs. There are courses in Technology Simulations, Keyboarding, Computer Applications, and Computerized Accounting. Every classroom has access to the Microsoft Office Products as well as to the Internet.

    The Dual Enrollment Program with Chesapeake College and University of Maryland Eastern Shore offers the opportunity for the students who wish to get started on their college credits.
