Director of Special Education Conway Public School District
Local Educational Agency (LEA) supervisor licensure
Reports to: Superintendent
Supervises: Directly supervises Special Education Department supervisors, instructional specialists, office staff, school psychology specialists, audiologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, and Juvenile Detention Center (JDC) staff.
Terms of Employment: The contract length will be 240 days.
Evaluation: Based on local district policy and Arkansas Department of Education guidelines, and performed by the assistant superintendent.
Job Goal: The Director of Special Education will endeavor to oversee the administration and delivery of Special Education Department in order to enhance the overall effectiveness of the Conway Public School District.
Follows and maintains knowledge of all District policies and procedures.
Leadership Responsibilities - Administratively assists instructional, administrative, related service and support staff in decisions regarding the provision of Special Education Department. - Leads District initiative in preparing required financial budgets, reports, student and employee data required for state and federal reporting purposes, and delivery of services to identified students. - Provides leadership in development, implementation, and support of specialized education programs. - Serves as point of contact within the central administration for concerns regarding Special Education, Title I, and Juvenile Detention Center programs.
Administrative Responsibilities - Supervises and evaluates Special Education supervisors, instructional specialist, office staff, school psychology specialist (SPS) staff, related services, and Juvenile Detention Center personnel. - Acts as liaison with the Arkansas Department of Education for matters concerning the education of students with disabilities, at-risk students in need of supplemental services, and incarcerated youth entitled to educational services. - Works along with other directors/administrators to ensure appropriate staffing, programming, and budgetary support to maintain and deliver services in a fiscally efficient manner. - Oversees the Special Education and Juvenile Detention Center programs. - Plans, organizes, and supervises the deployment of staff to meet the needs of individual students, groups, and schools, and the allocation of funds to support these services.
Management Responsibilities - Prepares and keeps data to ensure accurate reporting for all state and federal program requirements for Special Education and Juvenile Detention Center programs. - Responsible for decisions related to individual, school, District, and community concerns for students with disabilities, those at risk for such, and those in alternate educational settings (residential, homebound, private schools, and the Juvenile Detention Center).
Public Relations Responsibilities - Strives to build understanding of procedural/program requirements, capacity of staff, and positive relationships with parents, patrons, colleagues, agencies, and community members. - Ensures that responses are provided to those seeking assistance regarding programming, placement, services, and compliance with state and federal rules and regulations.
Legal Responsibilities - Knows and understands state and federal rules/regulations/legal responsibilities for Special Education and Juvenile Detention Center programs. - Maintains documentation required for state and federal reporting, monitoring, financial audits, complaint, mediation, due process hearing(s), and students’ master files.
