Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Library Media Specialist
POSITION LOCATION: McRae Elementary School
FLSA: Exempt
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Supervise and manage the school library/media centers. Provide services and resources that allow students to develop skills in locating, evaluating, synthesizing, and using information to solve problems. Serve as teacher, materials expert, and curriculum adviser to ensure that library/media center is involved in instructional programs of the school.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Master's degree with major concentration in library/media
Valid state teaching license
License for School Library Media Specialist Grades 4-12
Teaching experience preferred
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to instruct and manage student behavior
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Demonstrate relentless commitment to academic achievement of all students.
Demonstrate effective customer service strategies to all district patrons.
Foster collegiality and team building among staff; encourage their active involvement in the decision-making process.
Communicate and promote expectation for high-level performance from students; hold students accountable for high performance; recognize excellence and achievement
Plan for integration of the library media program with the district curriculum in all subject areas.
Maintain well organized and attractive library setting.
Provide staff development opportunities for teachers on the availability and use of campus and district learning resources.
Assist staff and principals with planning school library program to meet identified needs.
Assist in curriculum guides for libraries.
Collaborate with teachers to integrate information literacy into the curriculum.
Participate in instructional planning by collaborating with classroom teachers to design, implement & evaluate resource-based teaching units.
Provide information literacy skills instruction.
Manage acquisitions, processing, organizing, distribution, maintenance, and inventory of resources for the library/media center.
Maintain flexible schedule to allow greatest availability of the media center to students.
Create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students.
Use effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
Carry out discipline in accordance with board policies and administrative regulations.
Model and encourage interaction with students which promotes positive attitudes toward school library.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
Comply with federal and state laws, Arkansas Department of Education rules, and board policies in the library/media services area.
Maintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors.
Communicate effectively with colleagues, students, and parents.
Other duties assigned by principals.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
Promote the District adopted policies and regulations dealing with access, confidentiality, copyright and selection.
Assist in the selection, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating of building library media support personnel as well as student assistants and volunteers.
Formulate long and short range goals (including a 5-year plan) and propose implementation & evaluation.
Adhere to the district guidelines and procedures of cataloging and classifying all resources.
Establish a plan for acquisition, maintenance and replacement of hardware and software.
Coordinate resources and activities with networks and area libraries.
Assist with building and district-wide curriculum and technology committees.
Attend faculty meetings and other appropriate staff and department meetings.
