Job Description

Position Title:  Freshman Academy Teacher

Department:    Campus

Reports To:      Building Principal

Contract:          2022-2023 School Year (190 Days)

Closing Date:   Until Filled



SUMMARY: The role of the Freshman Academy Teacher is to develop in each student an awareness of various career and college options; assist students in successful transitions to high school, as well as preparation for career and college; to motivate each student to acquire knowledge of financial literacy, time management and problem-solving skills. The Freshman Academy Teacher will increase the promotion rates of ninth-grade students by creating a welcoming environment that eases the transition from middle to high school.


To help students master subject content and credentialing skills that contribute to their educational, social development, and career/college readiness, incorporating a framework clustered into four domains of teaching responsibility: planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional responsibilities.




  • Provide an instructional program to meet the needs of all students.
  • Develops and implements a curriculum program consistent with district educational goals and objectives.
  • Implements the Freshman Academy’s high standards of a Learning Community in the classroom by maintaining high expectations for scholars, praising their hard work, and developing the academic, mental, and physical well-being of each student while guiding them with various life problems that they may encounter.
  • Implements a comprehensive youth development approach in a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to learning and appropriate to the developmental level of the students.
  • Works collaboratively with a team of Academy teachers and staff to share best practices around lesson planning, instructional techniques, instructional media, classroom management, and academic goals.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects with the ability to communicate these objectives effectively to students, staff, and parents.
  • Adapts lesson plans to suit diverse scholar needs while assessing and supporting their strengths, interests and abilities.
  • Works with collaborative, interdisciplinary teams to motivate students with relevant exercises and activities to enhance freshman transition efforts.
  • Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation in accordance with JNPSD, state and federal guidelines.
  • Identifies special needs and seeks the assistance of JNPSD specialists.
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports to supervisors and parents.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law and JNPSD policy.
  • Assists in designing, upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations and School Board Policy.
  • Actively participates in faculty and/or department meetings.
  • Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Exerts leadership in working with school and JNPSD staff.
  • Assists in the selection of books, equipment and other instructional materials.
  • Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students and their parents.
  • Provides for professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning.
  • Assists in the preparation of data for local, state and federal reports.
  • Assists in the collection of data for providing appropriate intervention.
  • Take all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records as required by law and District policy.
  • Develop reasonable Classroom behavior rules and procedures, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and just manner.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator in the evaluation process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.  

EDUCATION/LICENSURE/EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree required; field of study correlated to teaching assignment as a Freshman Academy teacher. Teacher with any licensure code, preferred certification in a career technical education area.

Nine and one-fourth (9.25) month contract (190 days) on teacher’s salary schedule plus Benefit Package NOTE: Precise placement on the salary schedule will be determined based upon experience.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of pre-employment background checks. Appropriate personal and professional conduct at all times around students, other staff members and the general public.
